Original brown cloth stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Some pencil drawings on preliminary leaves (dated 1855), foxing and discoloration to some leaves, light chipping to spine ends, a very good copy. Thompson was an abolitionist from Illinois, who was arrested in Missouri in 1841 for "slave abduction", attempting to help slaves escape into Canada. He was sentenced to twelve years in the Missouri State Penitentiary, but was pardoned and released after 4 years, 11 months, and 12 days.
