16 Volumes. 8vo (actually a small 4to.), the volumes measure just under 5 x 8 inches. 19th century tree-calf, spines designed in gilt, lettered in gilt on panels of black. A few slightly cracked hinges and modest shelf wear, a very nice clean set. This is a uniform binding of two separate sets; the first set, of ten volumes, has the legend "Barr's Buffon" at the head of the title page. The second set, of six volumes, is issued anonymously. Small 4to. 165pp. Bound in red half-calf & cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Gray end papers. Slight wear to title leaf, a clean and very good copy. Preliminary and final blank leaves contain pen notes, apparently listing publications relating to the case. The pagination skips pages 93-96, as seen in other copies; nothing is missing. A famous case which saw several contemporary editions published in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and possibly Boston. Calvert was a notorious scoundrel. He was acquitted in this case, but dogged by scandal until he died of fever in Naples at the age of 40.

The running title at the top of the page is "Geburlicher werck." and the numeral XXV. The verso bears text only and the running title "Das Erst theyl".
