Small 4to. Woodcut device on title. Both works are illustrated with woodcut diagrams (some full-page) and initials. Aristarchus is comprised of 42 leaves numbered on rectos only; [4 leaves of title and preliminaries, 38 leaves of text numbered 1 - 38]. Hero of Alexandria is 82 leaves, numbered on rectos only; [2 leaves of title and preliminaries, 80 leaves of text numbered 1 - 80 (pages 78 & 80 misnumbered, both as '70')]. Old vellum, some creases and edge wear, very good. The first gathering is loose; some moderate wear and red speckling of title, and a small repair to lower title of the first work (an excised signature, patched). Moderate deterioration to rear end paper and darkening to part of the blank verso of the final leaf; leaves are uniformly clean and in excellent condition. Authors and titles are abbreviated and inscribed in ink on the lower page edges. Remains of original lettering to upper spine. An unsophisticated copy, quite fresh. An earlier Latin translation of the work by Aristarchus (English equivalent: "On the sizes and distances of the sun and moon") was included in a scientific compilation published in Venice in 1498; this 1572 printing is the first edition of Commandino's translation. Notes are by Pappus of Alexandria. "Aristarchus is celebrated as being the first man to have propounded a heliocentric theory, eighteen centuries before Copernicus ...". The work by Hero of Alexandria is on pneumatics. Federico Commandino (1509 - 1575) was an Italian mathematician, notable for his translations of early mathematical works from the Greek and Arabic.
