A hand-coloured aquatint etching on wove paper, from the [1820] 3rd Edition. This is Plate 3. Size is about 5.5 x 9 inches. A very good copy, some browning to upper margin, attractively coloured. This title was written in imitation of William Combe's three Doctor Syntax tours. Thomas Rowlandson has been credited with the illustrations to this book, but it seems more likely that they are by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. From advertisements quoted in Tooley, at least two artists were involved in making the plates (RV Tooley, 'English books with coloured plates 1790 to 1860' ( Folkestone and London, 1973), cat. no. 434).
