1 Robinson (Dr. J.H.) [John Hovey Robinson]. Nick Whiffles, The Trapper Guide. A Tales of the North-West.
NY: Dillingham, 1886. [1888].
Original tan printed wrappers. Front cover and early leaves almost detached, wear to edges, paper very yellowed, brittle and crumbling, basically very good otherwise. Issued as No. 5 in the "New York Weekly" series. The date on the title page is 1886, but the upper front cover bears a copyright date of 1888. Also the imprint at the base of the cover lists Dillingham as "Successor To G. W. Carleton". There is an edition of this book published by Carleton in 1877. Nick Whiffles was a popular character in fiction during the 1850s, as pointed out in this extract from a biography of the author: "In March, 1858, he began to write exclusively for the New York Weekly,(6) and it was in this paper that the great scout "Nick Whiffles" and his dog "Calamity" first appeared, June 5, 1858. Nick was so popular that other story papers took him up after Dr. Robinson's death and treated him as real person, much to the disgust of the New York Weekly."
