London & NY: Saxon, 1886. Third Edition, 15th Thousand. cat40a 
Brown boards, designed and lettered in black. Chipping at corners, worn at hinges, spine rubbed, internally not bad. Usually seen in cloth, this is a cheaper binding in boards, with ads for perfume and bath products on the inner covers and end papers. At One Shilling, a cheaper issue, something like a yellowback. Book ads on the rear cover, with the statement at the bottom: Beware of Piratical Editions!!! Flaubert's historical tale of a mercenary revolt set during the first Punic War. Cannibalism, human (child) sacrifice, magic and superstition.

Orange cloth designed and lettered in black. Frontispiece. A bit dusty, a clean very good copy. Issued as a volume in "The World's Storytellers" series, Edited by Arthur Ransome. Three stories, a short chronology, and an introductory essay by Ransome. The British edition of this collection was issued by T.C. & E.C. Jack in the same year.
