81 Lambeth Palace Lambeth Palace, London. Der Pallast oder Residenz des Erzbisschoffs von Canterbury genandt Lambeth, an der Themse zu London in der Vorstadt Westminster. [The text repeated in French].

Augsburg: au negoce commun de L'Academie Imperiale..., (ca.1750). A perspective view - vue d'optique - engraved by Jean Benoit Winckler, of the Archbishop of Canterbury's residence in London on the Thames. Titled: "Collection des Prospects" and with the title at the head (LE PALAIS DE L'ARCHEVEQUE DE CANTERBERRI A LONDRES) printed inversely. Size: 43 X 32 cm. An engraving with contemporary hand-coloring. Some old stains to rear, some wrinkling, but in very good condition, the colors bright and attractive. This would have been viewed using an optical diagonal machine, an apparatus which used a double convex lens and mirror arrangement to produce an illusion of recession or distance.

84 Lubbock (Sir John) Pre-Historic Times, as Illustrated by Ancient Remains and the Manners and Customs of Modern Savages.
anticat16
London: Williams and Norgate, 1869. Second edition. Lithographic frontispiece & 4 plates (1 coloured), 228 figures in the text. Original red cloth, the spine & covers designed in black, the spine ruled & lettered in gilt. Dark brown coated end papers. The inner front hinge is cracked, and has been repaired with cloth tape (partly detached; tears along the outer hinges are repaired with glue, and there is dust soiling of the cloth and moderate edge wear. The spine lettering is bright, and internally the book is quite fresh and clean. With the wolf head bookplate of Jack London on the inner front cover, and a couple of pencil marks in the catalogue at the rear (dated October, 1869). Perhaps Jack London's copy, and if so arguably a source used in writing BEFORE ADAM. This London bookplate does show up on books which London did not own; the provenance of this one suggests that it could have been his copy. A significant work by Baron Avebury, who introduced the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic, and who was a force in 19th century archaeology.

Cheap Repository. The Happy Waterman., More (Hannah) [published anonymously].
91 More (Hannah) [published anonymously]. Cheap Repository. The Happy Waterman.

London: R. Marshall and R. White / Bath: S. Hazard, [1795]. 12mo. A 12-page chapbook measuring 9cm x 15cm. Original self-wrappers, stitched. Woodcut illustration on the first leaf. Modest wear to the spine from being in a binding, slight blemishes to some upper margins, a clean very good copy generally. This Cheap Repository tract is from the second, or Marshall/Hazard series, published from May, 1795 - January, 1796. The verso of the first leaf bears ads for the series which begin with June, and which indicate that June and July titles have been published already; this title, The Happy Waterman, is listed among the August titles in the ads. This is the London version of this tract, and it is interesting to compare it to the Bath version (which may be viewed in its entirety, online at McGill University's website). In this London version, Marshall is first in the imprint whereas in the Bath version, Hazard comes first. Also the woodcut is slightly different, as is the decoration at the head of A2. The catchword on page 10 is "rience" in the London version, and "perience" in the Bath version. Ads in the Bath version begin with September, and vary slightly in content from the London ones. A nice example of an early publication from this notable series.

London: Benj. Bragg, 1706. First edition. 4to. 96 pp. Disbound. First few leaves are loose, final two leaves are ragged on the edge, with some loss of text from the outer edge. This book has been trimmed to a slightly irregular shape, probably to fit in with some other books during binding; the trimming has caused the loss of some characters and marginal printed notes throughout, also many signature marks and catch words have been at least partially eradicated. So, a somewhat imperfect copy, offered with all faults. An uncommon book.
