The Satirist, or Monthly Meteor. Vol. II., The Satirist
122 The Satirist The Satirist, or Monthly Meteor. Vol. II.
London: Printed for Samuel Tipper, 1808.
8vo. Full calf, spine gilt. Some scuffing of spine and covers, rear blank removed, scattered foxing throughout, contemporary ink inscription on title; otherwise generally tight and very good. This is the second volume, containing the issues of March, April, May, June, and July, 1808 (the July issue is misdated 1807). Each number has a folding frontispiece; the first three are in colour. Considerable wear to the plates, which have been split and repaired with varying degrees of expertise; the first plate has been reassembled using glued paper strips, the others principally with what looks like acid-free archival tape. There is still splitting at the folds, and chipping along old folds and at edges, with some very minor loss here and there. The fourth plate is a courtroom scene including a flatulent devil; the fifth plate is The Rival Magicians, which shows a negro magician with a wand of sugar cane, amid a complex scene which is a satire on the Bill for prohibiting the distillation of spirits from grain. An image of the plate may be seen at the British Museum's site by searching: "rival majicians". The Satirist ran from 1808 through 1814.
