NY: Brentano's, (1924). First edition. Light brown cloth, ruled and lettered in dark green. An owner's name and date are penned on the front end paper, otherwise a fine copy in a slightly chipped, very good pictorial dust jacket, splits along the folds internally repaired with tape. A nice looking copy. A novelization of this popular play, which was filmed three times. About an unorthodox doctor, a mystic from a Hungarian Gypsy camp, who succeeds in curing a woman when British surgeons have declared her condition hopeless.

NY: Jacobsen-Hodgkinsin, 1926. First edition. Pictorial wrappers. A photoplay edition, illustrated with stills on inserted plates, as well as some on the rear cover. Paper is very browned and brittle, a number of page corners are broken off, ownership signature on title page, very good otherwise. The film was produced by Joseph Schenck Productions, starring Norma Talmadge and Ronald Colman. The original story is from the 1920 novel by Andre Picard, later (1921) adapted for the stage by David Belasco and produced on Broadway. The film was remade in 1931, starring Mary Pickford.

West Branch: Cummington Press, 1966. Plain gray wrappers, printed title label on upper front cover. Some foxing of early and late leaves as usual, edges slightly bumped, but a fine copy. The colophon states that 125 copies were printed, but apparently only 100 were produced.

London: E. Rimmel, 1869 - 1879. Original decorative wrappers, each programme is 4pp; a single leaf, folded once to make a booklet (one, from 1877, is 8pp.). Mostly undated, but one contains an announcement of the first anniversary of the Theatre, and is dated December 20th, 1869. Another, in slightly larger format, is dated 1879. Condition is mostly very good - some have chips from corners and edges, and some have short tears or splitting at the spine. The issue of December 20, 1869 lists Mr. Henry Irving as appearing in "Uncle Dick's Darling". Irving later wrote a sketch for the "Clover Papers" in which he reminisced about this play at the Gaiety Theatre. The Gaiety Theatre opened in 1868, built on the site of the earlier Strand Musick Hall. These programmes were "Printed and Perfumed by E. Rimmel, 96, Strand," etc. ... The perfume has not survived the years, alas. For the lot:

First edition. Black boards, blue leather spine, printed paper labels on spine and front cover. Black end papers. Tipped-in frontispiece, several illustrations within the text (one of them a drawing of Dylan by Leonard Baskin), and many reproductions of the original manuscript. Publisher's prospectus laid in. Also laid in is the original invoice for the book, signed by Jeff Towns. A fine copy in the blue cloth slipcase, which exhibits only nominal shelf wear. The entire edition was 226 copies; this is copy V of 26 lettered copies, signed by Loren MacIver. Published on 9 November, 1993, to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the poet's death. A handsome production.

This is Exemplaire No. 39 of the Série Luxe. The Noel Dum illustration is double-page, in color, and with a short text by Paul Eluard.
