C. Suetonii Tranquilli XII Caesares. Ex uetusto exemplari emendatiores multis locis., Suetonius [Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus]
124 Suetonius [Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus] C. Suetonii Tranquilli XII Caesares. Ex uetusto exemplari emendatiores multis locis.
Paris: Roberti Stephani, 1543.
8vo. 352pp. plus colophon leaf at rear. Illustrated title. Contemporary full vellum, "Suetonius" on upper spine in black script. Some wear to joints, discoloration to lower front cover and spine, very good otherwise. The title leaf has suffered some loss (through wear or erasure) to the upper edge (not affecting title) and a section about 2 x .5 inches just beneath the woodcut on the title. This missing section has affected four lines of text on the verso of the title, part of the brief Life of Suetonius printed there. There is contemporary marginalia on the final page of the contents and the first page of text, in a minute hand, filling all available margin space; additionally there are handwritten numbers before sections, and occasional small marginalia throughout. In general an agreeable copy of this 1543 Paris edition.

The Satirist, or Monthly Meteor. Vol. II., The Satirist
127 The Satirist The Satirist, or Monthly Meteor. Vol. II.
London: Printed for Samuel Tipper, 1808.
8vo. Full calf, spine gilt. Some scuffing of spine and covers, rear blank removed, scattered foxing throughout, contemporary ink inscription on title; otherwise generally tight and very good. This is the second volume, containing the issues of March, April, May, June, and July, 1808 (the July issue is misdated 1807). Each number has a folding frontispiece; the first three are in colour. Considerable wear to the plates, which have been split and repaired with varying degrees of expertise; the first plate has been reassembled using glued paper strips, the others principally with what looks like acid-free archival tape. There is still splitting at the folds, and chipping along old folds and at edges, with some very minor loss here and there. The fourth plate is a courtroom scene including a flatulent devil; the fifth plate is The Rival Magicians, which shows a negro magician with a wand of sugar cane, amid a complex scene which is a satire on the Bill for prohibiting the distillation of spirits from grain. An image of the plate may be seen at the British Museum's site by searching: "rival majicians". The Satirist ran from 1808 through 1814.
