Boards are worn with paper chipped away at fore-edges, a sizeable piece is broken out of the center of the rear board; foxing and discoloration of leaves typical of American books of this period; very good otherwise. Upper corner torn from one leaf (109/110), affecting the running headline. An ownership inscription in the front is that of Abraham Winslow, Bought January 1st 1823.

Three volumes, marbled boards with leather spines. Numbered on the title pages by hand, these are volumes 2, 3 & 4, each having 60 pages. Volumes 2 & 4 are uniformly bound with red leather spines, measuring a height of 22cm.; volume 3 is slightly wider, has a brown leather spine, and stands 23cm. in height. Volumes 2 & 4 have the Button & Whitaker imprint, while volume 4 bears the imprint of Purdey & Button's. So, a partial make-up set of this scarce compilation, which ran to six volumes. Upper cover detached from volume 3, wear to edges and corners, armorial bookplates in all volumes, about very good otherwise. Previously published in the 1790s by Thompson, London. Boston: Jenks, Hickling & Swan, 1853. Number Sixty-Two. 48 pages [plus 12 leaves inserted]. Sewn into contemporary dark marbled wrappers, this copy interleaved with 12 leaves of ruled blue paper, one for each month. Several of the inserted leaves contain extensive records of expenses for produce sold, workers paid, and the like. One mentions a neighbor (?) hanging himself. Lower corner has old dampstains, scattered foxing, wear to the spine, very good in general. Illustrated title and small vignette illustrations for the months. Small embossed stamp on upper title leaf of Groom Company, Stationers, Boston.

Salem, Mass.: Ladies' Centennial Committee, 1875. A broadside, one sheet measuring 12.5 X 18.5 inches. Folded once, in half, some splitting along the fold, and some chipping to the margins. Very brittle and fragile. Affixed to the remains of a backing paper at the top edge, secured there by a pasted strip of paper. A verse in fifteen numbered stanzas, with cuts of ten initialed coffins at head; first line: "Awake, my muse, and tune the song." A lengthy note following the elegy is signed: "A Friend to the Deceased." The colophon at the bottom reads: "Copied from a broadside in possession of Geo. R. Curwen, Esq., and printed to be sold at an Exhibition of Antique Relics, &c., held by the Ladies' Centennial Committee, of Salem, Mass., Dec. 15, 1875." This is a facsimile reprint of: [Boston] : Printed and sold by E. Russell, next the cornfield, Union Street, near the market. (Pr. 3 cop.), [1773] (Bristol B3565).

Engraved frontispiece and 5 inserted plates (one of a whale wrecking a boat). Light foxing to the plates, chip from the paper spine label, a clean very good copy generally. One short tale is about William Cowper and his dog, a water spaniel, and a Cowper poem is printed: The Dog and Water-Lily. Illustrations are by James Johnstone. The first edition was published in 1833.

[np/nd, possibly Portland, Maine, USA] c.1812. A diminutive chapbook measuring 2.75 x 4 inches. 16pp [final leaf numbered 14]. Original marbled wrappers, stitched. The first leaf has been excised, so the exact title and publisher cannot be determined; the above title is taken from the first leaf. With several ownership signatures of John Gleeson from 1812 & 1813; on the inner rear cover: "John Gleeson / his Book Bought / the 14th of April 1812". On the inner front cover: "John Gleeson / His Book January / 14th 1813 -". Some foxing & discolouration of a few leaves, very good condition. Conversion tables are included for English Money (4 Farthings make 1 Penny) and Federal Money: (10 Dollars ... 1 Eagle).

First edition under this title; originally published in 1797 as: The Cannibals' progress... This copy is of the variant having 'Hatcherd' for 'Hatchard' in the imprint. A popular work which saw numerous edition, including several in the USA. A truly bloody account of the French invasion of Germany, replete with descriptions of all manner of atrocities.

Salem, Mass.: Ladies' Centennial Committee, 1875. A broadside, one sheet measuring about 8.5 X 13 inches. Three cuts of a sailing ship at the top, text in two columns. The song is in fifteen stanzas, first line: "Father and I went down to camp...". [This version of Yankee Doodle is attributed to Edward Bangs by S. Foster Damon.] The colophon at the bottom states: "The above fac-simile of a rare copy of the original, now in the possession of Geo. R. Curwen, Esq., is printed to be sold at an Exhibition of Antique Relics, &c., held by the Ladies' Centennial Committee of Salem, Mass., Dec. 15, 1875." A facsimile reprint of: [Salem, Mass.] : Printed [by Thomas C. Cushing] and sold [by William Carlton] at the Bible and Heart. [1793] (Evans 25139). Trimmed a bit close but no text is affected; some chipping to lower edge and a few tears in margins. Pasted to a partial backing paper along the left edge, secured by a glued-on strip of paper.

An autograph letter from Goldsborough Banyer to Mathew Vischer, a Counselor at Law in Albany, NY. Dated New York, 9th December 1785. 1 & 1/4 pages, closely written in black pen, with Banyar's flowery signature at the end. Concerning the claim to some land in New York State which was being made by a family in London. Twice folded, a piece torn away where the wax seal (still present) was attached (not affecting text). A bit of edge wear, but condition is very good, and entirely legible. Banyar was born in London, and first came to American in the 1730. He was appointed Deputy Auditor-General of New York in 1746, later he was Secretary of State under the colonial government. In his old age he moved to Albany, and died there in 1815 at the age of 91. His son, Goldsbrow Jr., was married to Maria Jay, the daughter of John Jay. His son died in 1806, but his daughter-in-law remained in Albany to care for Banyar until his death.

22 Volumes. Contemporary quarter calf & marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt on black panels. This is the 21 volume set in French published in Vienna from 1802 - 1821, plus the supplementary volume published in Leipzig by Weigel in 1843. Rubbing to joints, scattered foxing, upper hinge of Volume 1 tender but intact, chip from the upper spine of Volume 15; a very good set. The spine of Volume 21 is misnumbered as 20. This set contains 73 engraved plates [of 76]; the plates from Volumes 16 & 17 are not present, and appear never to have been bound in [copies are provided in facsimile]. The first plate at the rear of Volume 7 has been excised, as in all copies examined. The plate at the rear of Volume 6 is folding. The set is sometimes accompanied to two oblong 4to. volumes of plates, not present here. Internally fresh, a decent set overall. When wrapped this set will weigh about 10 kg (22 pounds) so shipping costs are a consideration.

Estcourt, MP; on a second sheet Beamish has written details of his salary with several calculations. In this book Beamish protests his forced retirement from the Navy Pay Office, and makes a plea for reinstatement.

San Francisco: Foster & ten Bosch, [1911-12]. A stapled booklet in tan wrappers, front cover printed in dark brown. Two illustrations and three folding plates at the rear. Staples rusting, some figures in pencil on back cover, otherwise a nice copy. An early work on the electrical method of dehydrating petroleum, this booklet is basically an ad for the Petroleum Rectifying Co. of California, whose ads and fact sheets appear at the rear. A very scarce book. Not in WorldCat, and we cannot find another copy listed.
